In the Big Inning

By Tom Siebert

Pat Kelly, an outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles in the late 1970s, once said to his manager Earl Weaver: “Skip, it’s great to walk with the Lord.” To which the fiery Weaver quipped: “I’d rather see you walk with the bases loaded.” Many Christians struggle with the dual desires to succeed in the world and to do God’s will. Jesus resolves this conflict when He enjoins us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your soul” and to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31). When we follow His command, we find that our most- satisfying success is attained by helping others to grow and prosper in Christ.
